An older post of mine discussed new paint colors. But the Merchandise Mart recently held its annual Design Show, featuring new trends, tips and styles for 2014. I was particularly interested in the new paint colors, as my clients are always interested to paint or repaint their homes in the latest hues.

Color of the Year 2014? A shade of blue called Breath of Fresh Air 806 from Benjamin Moore. And there are colors that inspire comfort and simplicity like Peach Parfait 2175-70, Coral Essence 2007-40, Lavender Mist 2070-60, Caribbean Teal 2123-50 and Black Satin 2131-10 among many more, that comprise a full spectrum palette.

Paint is one of the least expensive parts of home décor, compared to a sofa or dining table or carpet. But people agonize over the paint color much more. That’s because color can be a powerful force in a room or an entire home. Emotions are effected not only by the color but also by the finish – flat, matte, eggshell, semi gloss, high gloss, et cetera. Sheen is for both durability and aesthetics. For example, semi gloss heightens drama while matte absorbs light and brings calm, gloss adds visual focus.

A few tips about paint color from decorating professionals: Be conscious of the color and texture of furniture and objects you have in your space. Light colors can make a room look larger. If you have a light colored room and all your furniture is darker, you are putting contrast in a space, which will create confinement. When looking at a room color think about how it is framed within the other areas surrounding it. Take a step back and move through the space. Neutrals are calming. Reds are exciting. But remember that the look you desire to achieve is always the key.
